Let me start by telling you a little
bit about our race. It was started after the loss of our six brothers in the
Worcester Cold Storage Fire back in December 3, 1999 and has evolved into Worcester's
biggest community and family event. The proceeds from the event have changed
since its conception; at first the race was formed to raise money for the
permanent Memorial Fund being built in the memory of our fallen brothers. After
the first year (in which all of the proceeds were donated to the Memorial Fund)
we decided we had to give back to the community, our way of saying thank you
for all the support that was given to us during the tragedy. Each year we pick
different charities, all non profits and to date we have donated over $275,000.
The 11th Memorial race charities have not been determined yet but will be soon.
The race averages over 1,000 walkers / runners and well over 2000 people
present at the park on the day of the event.
The race is unlike any other race around. The focus of our race is not on the
race itself, nor is its focus on donating to the charities; it is more about
the community and bringing the city and surrounding towns together in a city
block party. At the event we have a free
barbecue, beverages, clowns, and moonwalk, free massages, a live DJ, a post
race party (location TBA), a silent sports auction at the park, prizes and much
much more. This year we are also having a performance
by the Worcester Firefighters Pipes and Drums.
The bonus part of all this is that we raise money for those in need. The other
unique thing is you don't have to be a runner / walker to enjoy all of these
things, just come to the park and take it all in. The race itself starts at
Institute Park running under two aerial ladder trucks draping the American Flag
and ends at Institute Park. The course is a figure eight that run by the Gove
St Fire Station and through Worcester's downtown.
The race not only has the area's best runners competing but also has those who
enjoy walking and reflecting on the moment. The memory of our fallen brothers
will never die as long as we keep this event going, and with the help of our
sponsors and people like you getting the word out, it will continue to live on.
Please help the Worcester Fire Department help support local non-profit
charities.
The WFD 6K has quickly become one of Worcester's biggest community and family
oriented charitable events and we touched more lives than we ever felt
possible. Our Committee is overwhelmed by the continued support of the
Worcester Fire Department by our sponsors that have become part of our team and
all the runners in the past 10 years. This
year's event will not only pay tribute to Jay, Joe, Jerry, Paul, Tim and Tom,
but also to Kevin Turner, an active Firefighter we lost last year.
As always, we thank you for your consideration in joining us. For more
information and details about this year's race and other ways you can help our
efforts, please feel free to contact Lt. John Franco at 508-829-1968 for
