Let me start by telling you a little bit about our race (if you are unaware of it).
It was started after we lost our six brothers in the Worcester Cold Storage Fire back
in December 3, 1999 and has evolved into Worcesters biggest community and family event.
The proceeds from the event have changed since its conception; at first the race was
formed to raise money for the permanent Memorial Fund being built in the memory of our
fallen brothers. After the first year (in which all of the proceeds were donated to the
Memorial Fund) we decided we had to give back to the community, our way of saying thank
you for all the support that was given to us during the tragedy. Each year we pick
different charities, all non profits and to date we have donated over $235,000. The
10th Memorial race charities are: Genesis Club, Connecticut Burn Foundation, Bottom
Line, Community Harvest Project and Sherrys House.
The race averages over 900 walkers/runners and well over 2000 people present at
the park on the day of the event.
The race / walk is not like any other event around the city of Worcester. The focus
of our race is not on the race itself, nor is its focus on donating to the charities;
it is more about the community and bringing the city and surrounding towns together
in a city block party. At the event we have a free barbecue, beverages, clowns, moonwalk,
free massages, a live DJ, a post race party at Tweeds on Grove St in Worcester, a silent
sports auction at the park, prizes and much much more. This year we are also having a
concert performed by the Worcester Firefighters Pipes and Drums.
The bonus part of all this is that we raise money for those in need. The other unique
thing is you dont have to be a runner / walker to enjoy all of these things, just come
to the park and take it all in. The race itself starts (running under two aerial ladder
trucks draping the American Flag) and ends at Institute Park. The course is a figure
eight that run by the Gove St station and through Worcesters downtown. The day
concludes with a post race party at Tweeds on Grove St.
The race not only has the areas best runners competing but also has those who enjoy
walking and reflecting on the moment. The memory of our fallen brothers will never die
as long as we keep this event going, and with the help of our sponsors and people like
you getting the word out, it will continue to live on. Please help the Worcester Fire
Department help support local non-profit charities.
As I write, it is hard to believe that this year will be our 10th Worcester Firefighters 6K!
Because of the support of generous sponsors like you, the WFD Memorial 6K has been both
an incredible tribute to our fallen brothers as well as a community event that has raised
well over $235,000 for those of our neighbors who need it most!
We are pleased to announce the 10th Annual Worcester Firefighters Memorial 6K Run/Walk
will be held Sunday, June 14th at 1:00 p.m. at Institute Park. This year will be a
bittersweet event as the committee has chosen not to continue the race as an annual event.
We feel that the tenth year is a memorable occasion and a fitting way to bring closure to
our efforts. We will consider holding a similar event on banner anniversary dates
(5 years a Memorial Run), only time will.
The WFD 6K quickly became one of Worcesters biggest community and family oriented
charitable events and we touched more lives than we ever felt possible. Our Committee
is overwhelmed by the continued support of the Worcester Fire Department by companies
like yours since that dreadful day, December 3, 1999, and hope that you will join us
one last time as we pay a final tribute to Jay, Joe, Jerry, Paul, Tim and Tom.
Once again, the Memorial 6K Race will offer a day of fun for the entire family with a
free BBQ, live entertainment, sports auction, a kiddy corner and much more. We
understand that we are in the midst of a troubled economy; however, we can only do
this with your help. We do hope you will please consider the sponsorship opportunities
on the attached sheet and join us on this very special occasion. Our beneficiary
organizations this year will include: Genesis Club, Connecticut Burn Foundation,
Bottom Line, Community Harvest Project and Sherrys House.
As always, we thank you for your consideration. For more information and details
